India Independent: The Mission

India Independent: books & ideas is a collective of independent publishers and

booksellers committed to nurturing a diverse, resilient, and inclusive publishing

ecosystem in India. We aim to offer readers books that reflect a wide range of

voices, experiences, and backgrounds, particularly those that are ignored by

commercial publishing priorities.

We believe that diversity in publishing must not depend on market

considerations alone. While we are committed to being sustainable and

profitable, our ultimate goal is to help build a large, vibrant, and enduring body

of work that reflects the complexities and pluralities of the world we live in.

India Independent encourages collaboration among authors, publishers and

booksellers to expand the reach of independently published books and build

solidarities across the industry. Through collective actions and collaborative

activities such as lectures, workshops, conferences, publishing projects, book

fairs, and shared learning, we seek to strengthen our practice. 

We are international in outlook. We will forge relationships with aligned

organisations across the globe with a clear commitment to our immediate

contexts.

India Independent will advocate for and work towards shaping a publishing

culture that is inclusive, collaborative, and future-facing.
