India Independent: The Numbers

Together, we bring over two centuries of publishing expertise. Founded

between the early 1990s and 2010s, we span academic, children’s, feminist,

and fiction and non-fiction trade publishing. Our collective legacy is marked by

bold lists, path-breaking translations, and a cultural impact that has shaped

India’s independent publishing landscape.

We have published more than 3,000 authors, including Ashish Kothari, Avay

Shukla, Bama, Damodar Mauzo, Geeta Kapur, Irfan Habib, Jerry Pinto, Kanak

Lata, Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd, Kumari Jayawardena, Mahasweta Devi, Manjula

Padmanabhan, Namdeo Dhasal, Omprakash Valmiki, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta,

Paul Zachariah, Prabhat Patnaik, Qurratulain Hyder, Ravish Kumar, Romila

Thapar, Shashi Deshpande, Teesta Setalvad, Urmila Pawar, Vandana Shiva,

Vijay Prashad, and Wendy Doniger. Our lists cut across literature, academic

writing, feminist theory, caste studies and children’s literature, creating one of

the richest reservoirs of contemporary Indian writing in print.

We have partnered with more than 80 international presses across Asia, Australia, Europe, the UK and the US, including Atlas Press, Chelsea Green, Columbia University Press, des femmes, Feltrinelli, Indiana University Press, Neue Erde, New Directions, New Internationalist, North Atlantic, Philippe Picquier, Rutgers University Press, Spinifex, Terra Nova, The Feminist Press, The New Press, University of Virginia Press, and Zed Books. Through co-publishing, international distribution and rights sales, we have carried Indian voices abroad while bringing writers such as Fatima Mernissi, Mariama Bâ, Naguib Mahfouz, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Noam Chomsky, and Suad Amiry into Indian lists.
